WHAT ARE HUB-MOTORS
Hub motors, also called in-wheel motors or wheel hub motors, are electric motors that are built into the hub of a wheel.
They combine the wheel and motor into one integrated unit.Hub motors work by using a brushless DC motor design. The stator, which contains the magnet wire coils, stays stationary and attaches to the bike or vehicle frame.
The rotor spins inside the stator and connects to the wheel hub and rim to provide forward propulsion. Electric current flowing through the coils creates a rotating magnetic field that causes the permanent magnet rotor to spin.
Hub motors offer several key advantages:
- Compact, lightweight, and simple design compared to traditional motors and drivetrains
- Increased efficiency due to fewer mechanical components and direct power transfer
- Flexible configurations – can be front, rear, or all-wheel drive
- Open up vehicle design space since no separate engine compartment is needed
However, hub motors also have some disadvantages:
- Add unsprung weight which can negatively impact ride quality and handling
- More expensive and complex than standard wheels
- High voltage electronics are exposed to weather and road hazards
Hub motors are increasingly being used in electric bicycles and electric cars due to their compact size, efficiency, and flexibility.
As the technology continues to mature, hub motors may become more prevalent across the automotive industry.
Introduction to the two types of E-bike Hub Motors
Electric bicycle hub motors are electric motors located inside the hub of a bike’s wheel to provide propulsion assistance. Hub motors come in two main types – geared hub motors and direct drive hub motors.
Geared hub motors: have internal planetary gear reduction systems that allow the motor to spin faster internally while the wheel spins at a slower speed. The gears provide more torque and allow the motor to be smaller and lighter.
Direct drive hub motors: directly connect the motor to the wheel, so the motor spins at the same speed as the wheel. Direct drive motors tend to be bigger and heavier to produce enough torque, but have very few moving parts so require little maintenance.
Both types of motors have their own pros and cons and are suited for different riding needs and conditions. This article provides a detailed comparison between geared and direct drive e-bike hub motors in terms of features, capabilities, advantages, disadvantages and ideal applications.
Power and Torque
Geared hub motors can produce very high torque from a standstill or low speeds, allowing strong acceleration and hill climbing ability. Their high torque comes from the internal gears that allow the small motor to spin faster while slowing down the wheel speed.
Direct drive motors produce less torque at low RPMs. Their torque is limited by the wheel size and RPM. So direct drives struggle with starting, acceleration and hill climbing unless very large and heavy. At higher RPMs above 20 mph, direct drive motors build speed and power more efficiently than geared motors. But most e-bikes are limited to 20-28 mph.
Efficiency
Geared hub motors are typically more efficient at lower speeds under 20 mph. Their gear reduction allows the motor to spin at optimal high RPMs while the wheel spins slower. This makes them very efficient for most e-bike riding.
Direct drives are less efficient at low speeds because the motor spins at the same lower RPM as the wheel. But they can be more efficient at very high speeds above 20 mph where geared motors struggle.
So for average e-bike use at under 20mph, geared hubs motors are generally more efficient, providing more range from the battery.
Weight
Geared hub motors are much smaller and lighter than direct drives with comparable power. Their gears provide torque multiplication from a small motor. This reduces overall e-bike weight compared to a direct drive.
Direct drive motors must be larger and heavier to produce enough torque. All this weight is added to the wheels, negatively impacting acceleration, handling and portability.
Noise
Geared hub motors operate with more noise than direct drives due to the internal gear reduction system. The gear noise is usually not very loud, but direct drives are virtually silent.
Maintenance and Durability
Direct drive motors have very few moving parts – just bearings and magnets spinning around coils. So they require little maintenance and their simple construction allows them to potentially last longer.
Geared motors have more moving parts and gears that wear over time. So they require more periodic maintenance and likely need replacing sooner than a direct drive motor.
Cost
Direct drive hub motors are generally much cheaper than geared motors to produce.
Geared motors require more precision components and assembly to create the internal gear system. This makes direct drives the budget option.
Applications
Geared hub motors are ideal for:
- City/commuting e-bikes: Frequent start/stop
- Cruising at lower average speeds
- Lightweight builds
- Smooth power delivery
Direct drive hub motors excel at:
- High speed e-bikes: Above 20 mph
- Regenerative braking
- Simple and quiet operation
- Low maintenance requirements
Why To7motor’s Hub Motor Stands Above the Rest
Superior Performance
Our hub motors are designed to deliver exceptional levels of power and torque. Many of their motors can output over 1000W of continuous power along with 80Nm or more of torque.
This enables excellent acceleration and the ability to climb steep hills even when carrying cargo or passengers. The power levels match or exceed mid-drive motors.

Colour
The D79 motor comes in two colour options – black or silver. The colour is purely aesthetic, affecting only the outward appearance of the motor.
Some customers may prefer the stealthy look of an all-black ebike, while others may like the contrast of a silver motor against black frame tubing. Ultimately the colour does not impact performance.
Installation Site
This motor is purpose-built for rear wheel installation. Mounting a hub motor on the rear drops weight over the drive wheel to improve traction.
This is especially helpful for climbing steep hills, where traction is most challenged. The rear is ideal for a geared hub like the D79 too, allowing the high torque to be reduced through gearing for smooth power delivery.
Front hub motors can sometimes overwhelm the front wheel on powerful ebikes.
Applied for E-bikes
As a 190mm wide hub, the D79 is optimized for fat tire e-bikes. Fat bikes with 3.5-5 inch wide tires are popular for riding across sand, snow and other soft terrain where the huge contact patch provides flotation and traction.
The wider hub spacing accommodates these big tires while maintaining proper spoke angles for wheel strength. The ample torque from the motor is well suited muscling these heavier bikes around.
A powerful, torquey motor is ideal since the rotary mass of the heavy wheels otherwise makes starting and stopping difficult.
Cable Routing
The motor cables for power and data exit the left side of this hub. This cleanly integrates into ebike frames, with the cables hidden inside the frame tubing for minimal exposure and neat aesthetics.
Exiting just one side also eases wheel removal for maintenance compared to hubs with cables on both sides. The cables being fully internal adds to the sealed environmental protection.
Cable Length
At 200mm total length, the cables offer reasonable flexibility for wiring within the bike frame. Shorter cables can restrict layout options and require tight bends, while longer cables require more accommodation space. 200mm hits the sweet spot between length and compact routing.
Sprocket Wheel
The D79 is drilled to fit standard 8, 9 or 10 tooth freewheel sprockets. More sprocket teeth provide higher torque to the wheel, while fewer teeth provide more outright speed.
8T would be selected for highest speed while 10T maximizes torque for off-road use. 9T strikes a good balance. These smaller sprockets complement the high internal gear reduction for big torque multiplication.
Brake Style
This motor is compatible with basic hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes. Discs provide excellent stopping power across all weather conditions, essential for controlling powerful ebike motors.
The discs mount to standard threaded rotor mounts on the motor exterior. This allows fitting any bike’s disc brake system to the motor very easily.
Spokes Holes
The hub flanges are drilled for 36 spokes. More spokes distribute torque over more wheels for a stronger wheel that stays true even under high loads.
36 spokes is the accepted standard for ebike rear wheels seeing significant power. The spokes connect to thick flanges to handle the forces.
Spokes Size
Either 13 gauge (2.3mm) or swaged 12 gauge (2.6mm) spokes should be used. Thicker spokes are very strong in tension and resistant to fatigue over bumps.
They also tolerate higher torque loads without winding up compared to thinner spokes common on bicycle wheels.
Spokes Central Distance
At 174mm, the hub spacing matches most common fat e-bikes. Maintaining this standard spacing allows fitting the wheels to compatible bikes without issue.
Open Size
A 190mm open width between the hub flange provides clearance for fat 3.5-5″ tires.
This is substantially wider than normal hubs, required to prevent bulky tire sidewalls from rubbing under compression.
Wheel Size
The D79 fits all modern ISO bicycle wheel sizes from 406mm (20″) to 622mm (700c).
It also accommodates old English sizes like 26″. This versatility allows creating complete wheels for virtually any ebike.
Voltage
Configured to operate on 48V or 52V electrical systems. Higher voltage extends top speed while lower voltage provides cheaper batteries and better efficiency.
An advanced programmable controller allows custom tuning the motor for any voltage between 48V and 60V as needed. Higher voltage unlocks more peak power.
Rated Power
Available in 1,000W, 1,500W or 2,000W configurations to suit light, moderate or hot rod power levels. More rated watts generally provides higher peak torque for acceleration and climbing.
It also extends top speed under ideal conditions. The level of power should match the bike application.
Max Speed
The motors achieve 50-60 km/h maximum speed depending on power level. The 2,000W version reaches the highest speeds over 60 km/h, while the 1,000W motor peaks just above 50 km/h.
This gives a wide range to fit legal regulations.
Max Torque
110 Nm of torque is extremely strong for an ebike hub motor. For comparison, mid-drive motors might offer just 70-80 Nm.
More torque provides better traction and hill climbing without needing to gear down using the bike’s gears. Less gear shifting improves the riding experience.
Reduction Ratio
The internal 5.8:1 gear reduction generates higher torque from the motor while limiting top speed.
This tuning suits the fatbike application where traction and acceleration are most important. A high torque bias also prevents burnout across loose terrain.
Magnet Items
More magnets concentrated into the motor boost torque density for impressive power from a compact package.
The D79 uses 16 high strength neodymium magnets. More magnets require more counteracting stator windings, keeping electromagnetic forces under control.
Speed Sensor
Multiple speed sensors placed around the motor inform the smart controller of the motor’s position and speed.
This enables precise vector control by the controller to maximize efficiency and fine tune the power delivery. More sensors provide smoother torque control and response.
Efficiency
An impressive 80% efficiency minimizes electrical losses through resistance heating, maximizing range from the battery.
High efficiency requires precision winding of the stator coils and advanced control algorithms. Efficiency drops when exceeding the rated power.
Work Temperature
Functional across an extreme temperature range from -20°C freezing to 45°C heat. The motor can be used year-round without climate impacting performance or reliability.
The controller throttles power if approaching the temperature limits to avoid overheating damage.
Noise Level
The precision zero-cogging winding technology keeps mechanical noise below 50 dBA even under high loads.
This quiet operation doesn’t disturb wildlife or communities when riding off-road. It also doesn’t attract unwanted attention.
Weight
At just 5.9 kg, the D79 is reasonably lightweight given its robust construction and high power / torque ratings. Less weight improves handling and ride feel compared to bulky direct drive motors. It also avoids burdening the bike dynamics.
Waterproof Level
Meeting IP65 requirements proves the motor resists dust ingress and direct high pressure water jets. The high waterproofing withstands wet, gritty riding conditions without shorting or corrosion issues over time.
Shells Material
The outer casing uses lightweight yet strong aluminum alloy rather than steel or plastic. This saves considerable weight while providing excellent structural and heat dissipation properties. Aluminum better manages swelling/contraction across extreme temperature fluctuations too.
Summary
the D79-190KL is an extremely capable hub motor perfectly suited for high power fat tire e-bikes and E-cargo bikes thanks to its wide diameter, high torque, and robust weatherproof design.
It hits the sweet spot of power, torque, efficiency and weight to muscle these heavy bikes across all terrain in all conditions. The wide configuration options let riders scale the performance to their needs and regional regulations.

Installation Site
This hub motor is engineered for front wheel installation, providing front wheel drive. Mounting it up front balances the bike’s weight distribution by adding weight over the front tire.
This weight bias improves high speed stability and handling compared to rear hub motors that can make the rear end wander.
Front hub motors also climb exceptionally well, using the rider’s mass sitting over the drive wheel to increase traction. Less spinning or wheel slip is experienced compared to lighter rear ends.
Applied for E-bikes
The D7-135QL is optimized for, fat tire and cargo e-bikes that need substantial power to conquer trails or haul heavy loads. The torquey power delivery prevents wheel spin so you always get maximum traction.
We spec’ed it to thrive under high loads so it won’t let you down, even riding 2-up. It has potential for light electric motorcycles too.
Cable Routing
The power and data cables exit only the left side of this hub motor for clean frame integration. This allows hiding the wires neatly inside the frame tubing so you don’t see any messy external wires dangling about.
Exiting just one side also makes removing the front wheel quicker for maintenance since you don’t have to unplug cables from both sides.
Cable Length
The total cable length is 200mm which gives reasonable flexibility for wiring inside the frame.
Shorter cables can be restrictive to work with and require tight bends, while longer cables require more accommodation space in the frame. We’ve found 200mm to be the ideal balance between length and compact routing.
Sprocket Wheel
This direct drive hub does not use a sprocket. It drives the wheel directly with no gear reduction.
Direct drive maximizes durability and minimizes maintenance since there are no gears inside that can fail over time. It also allows regenerative braking to charge the battery.
Brake Style
The D7-135QL works with basic hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes for all-weather stopping power.
Discs have far greater wet weather performance than rim brakes. Being able to lock up the front wheel gives you the utmost control. The hub has industry standard mount points to fit your bike’s discs.
Spokes Holes
The hub flanges utilize a 36 hole drilling pattern to lace three cross patterns using 12-13g spokes. More spokes spreads the torque over more wheels for a stronger wheel that stays true even pounding through rough terrain.
36 hole is the accepted standard for ebike applications seeing high torque. The spokes all connect to thick flanges coming off the hub to handle the forces.
Spokes Size
Either 13 gauge (2.3mm) or swaged 12 gauge (2.6mm) spokes must be used to handle the torque loads.
Thicker spokes are very strong in tension and fatigue resistant compared to thinner spokes used on bicycle wheels. The thicker spokes are less likely to wind up or break under high loads.
Spokes Central Distance
At 144mm, the hub spacing matches wider “boost” fat-tire bikes, as well as many fat tire e-bikes. This wider spacing creates a laterally stiffer wheel using shorter spokes.
Shorter spokes are stronger and more durable. The boost spacing also clears wide tires without rubbing the frame.

More power provides faster acceleration and higher top speeds, while limiting power increases efficiency for longer range. Lots of low end torque makes easy work of hills.
Max Speed
Supports 40-50 km/h max speeds depending on power level. The 750W does over 50 km/h with ideal conditions.
The max speed is limited by voltage and internal gear ratio, not power. So a lower power motor can achieve the same max speed given enough voltage.
Max Torque
Over 90 Nm of torque rips across all sorts of terrain and flies up steep hills. Less gear shifting improves the riding experience. Way more torque than a mid drive motor in a compact hub package.
Reduction Ratio
A very high 7.77:1 ratio gives tremendous torque multiplication from the motor to the wheel for direct drive. This gives great off-road performance but limits top speed. The massive low end power makes easy work of technical trails.

Installation Site
This rear hub motor provides rear wheel drive power delivery. Mounting a geared hub motor in the rear allows the high torque output to be reduced through additional gearing using the bike’s gears and sprocket.
This allows tuning the power delivery for smooth traction control and progression across the speed range. Rear drive also places more weight over the drive wheel compared to a front hub.
This extra mass improves traction through added grip and friction, so you can put more power down off the line without excessive wheel spin. The rear location is also ideal for cargo e-bikes where the heavy load already sits over the back end.
Applied for E-bikes
The B7-138XR is purpose-built for high power electric mountain and cargo bikes that require generous low-speed torque for conquering demanding trails or hauling heavy loads.
We optimized the torque-biased power delivery to prevent wheel spin so you always get maximum thrust, even riding 2-up or shouldering big cargo weight. It has potential as an electric motorcycle hub too.
Cable Routing
The power and data cables exit only the left side of this rear hub motor for clean frame integration that hides away the wiring.
Routing the cables along the left chainstay allows them to enter the downtube for internal routing inside the frame, concealing everything for super clean aesthetics.
No messy cables dangling externally. Exiting just one side also makes removing the rear wheel quicker for maintenance since you don’t have to unplug cables from both sides.
Cable Length
At 200mm total length, the cables are sufficiently long for flexible wiring routed through the frame while avoiding excessive slack needing accommodation inside.

Sprocket Wheel
The B7-138XR is CNC machined to fit standard 6 or 7 tooth freewheel sprockets. More rear sprocket teeth provide higher torque output to the wheel, while using fewer teeth provides more outright top speed potential.
We recommend the 7 tooth sprocket for most general trail riding applications, with the 6 tooth for maximum speed. This additional gear reduction works with the internal hub ratio to achieve tremendous torque multiplication at the rear wheel.
Brake Style
This powerful direct drive hub works with any basic hydraulic or mechanical disc brake system to provide all-weather stopping confidence.
Disc brakes offer far stronger wet weather braking performance compared to rim brakes which can be sketchy when riding steep, loose trails in the rain.
Having ample front wheel braking power gives you the utmost speed control and confidence when descending rugged terrain. The hub has industry standard mount points to directly bolt on your bike’s brake caliper.
Spokes Holes
The hub flanges utilize a 36 hole drilling pattern to properly lace three cross patterns using thick 12-13 gauge spokes. Having more spokes spreads the torque over a larger wheel area for a stronger wheel build that stays true even when pounding through rough terrain.
36 holes is the accepted standard for ebike applications seeing such high torque loads. The spokes all connect to robust flanges coming off the hub shell to handle the forces without tearing out.
Spokes Size
Either 13 gauge (2.3mm) or swaged 12 gauge (2.6mm) double butted stainless steel spokes must be used to withstand the extreme hub motor torque loads.
These thicker spokes are extremely strong in tension and fatigue resistant compared to thinner spokes used on bicycle wheels. They are much less likely to wind up, deform, or break when dealing with high power over years of hard riding.
Spokes Central Distance
The wider 146mm boost rear spacing creates a laterally stiffer wheel using shorter spokes compared to older 135mm spacing.
The reduced spoke length enables higher tension levels for a stronger wheel, while also minimizing flex for improved power transfer. Boost spacing also provides more tire clearance from the chain and seatstays which is needed when fitting wider, knobbier rubber.
Open Size
With 138mm between the flanges, this hub has lots of room for fitting aggressive e-mountain bike tires up to 2.6″ wide.
The ample clearance prevents tires rubbing at low inflation pressures during hard cornering. Wider tires can also be run for maximum traction and cushion.
Wheel Size

Smaller rear sprockets can extend the top speed further when desired, at the expense of low end torque.
Max Torque
This hub motor churns out over 75 Nm of relentless torque to the rear wheel. That’s way more grunt than the best mid drive motors in the market, all packed into a compact hub package.
This incredible torque allows charging up the steepest technical climbs without needing to downshift the bike’s gears. Just twist and go with extreme traction on tap.
Reduction Ratio
The internal 7.77:1 gear reduction generates tremendous wheel torque, multiplying the motor’s already high torque over 4 times.
This gives outstanding off-road traction and low speed control but does limit outright top speed potential…which is useless off-road anyway! The massive low-end power makes trails and inclines disappear under the wheels. You’ll love blasting up climbs that once seemed impossible.
Magnet Items
16 high strength neodymium magnets deliver extremely impressive torque density from a reasonably compact hub shell, considering its power class.
More magnets require additional counteracting stator windings to handle the intense electromagnetic forces generated. We optimize the design to balance size, power, and efficiency.
Speed Sensor
Multiple speed sensors placed around the motor report back precise rotor position and speed feedback data to the smart controller.
This enables proper torque vector calculations for optimal efficiency and power delivery. More sensors result in ultra smooth low speed modulation with liquid response you’ll love in technical sections.
Efficiency
We achieve a class-leading 80% efficiency rating, minimizing electrical losses mainly through resistance heating in the windings.
Less wasted energy equates to less battery drain so you can go farther on a charge. We spend countless hours optimizing the motor design and control algorithms to maximize efficiency across the power band.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CERTAIN HUB MOTORS HERE?
I’m sure you have some questions floating around in your head, such as, “What are the differences between the K7 motor and the E7 Motors.”
Hopefully, I’ll be answering all the questions you have in your mind, but before I answer these questions, there is something I’ll have to explain clearly: What is public mold?
What is PUBLIC MOLD?
A mold is a tool or form used in manufacturing to shape materials (such as plastic, metal, or composite) into specific shapes.
Which means a public mold means that the mold design is not proprietary or exclusive to a single manufacturer. Manufacturers can use the same mold design to produce e-bike motors without restrictions.
So, basically it means the motor’s design is not special / owned by us, as it is a PUBLIC mold.

Conclusion
E-bike hub motors come in geared and direct drive versions, each with unique advantages. Geared motors provide better torque for acceleration and hills, while direct drives can be simpler and more durable.
Consider riding needs and conditions to pick the best motor. Both types continue to improve and advanced models can strike a balance with the ideal characteristics.
